Meet Your Mentor
My name is Merav Bustan, your personal mentor and founder of FREEDOM TO DESIGN.
Picture this: an overworked, underpaid designer putting in all hours of the day, weekends, and vacations too, while trying to have some sort of a personal life.
That was me, investing all I had into someone else’s business, not getting the credit I deserved, and trading my personal life and peace of mind for a constant climb to prove myself. To the outside world, I was at the top - a design director at a prestigious studio, working on projects I never thought possible. But something was off.
This couldn’t be what success feels like. I craved freedom - the possibility to enjoy my life and work without burnout. The worst part? I was stuck, afraid to take the leap and go on my own. I thought about changing professions altogether, but I’m a designer. In my heart and soul, I’m a designer.
What if I could make my knowledge work for me? What if there was a way to turn all that expertise into something tangible and reliable? So that's exactly what I did - I traded in the hamster wheel for entrepreneurship.
Within one month, I quit my job and started my own business, relying on my experience and unique ability to streamline processes. I worked day and night to create a complete design process that works, drawing on 13 years of experience and knowledge from mentors and colleagues to build my perfect business infrastructure.
What happened next? I started closing project after project, working fewer hours, and making more money than I did as an employee. I could take a three-week vacation, and my clients didn’t call me. I learned to ski! But more than freedom, I got my passion for design back.
Other designers began asking how I was doing it, what my process was, how I sent offers to clients, and how I felt so confident. That’s when I knew I was onto something. I’ve always loved mentoring others even as a teenager, I was a dance instructor. Sharing knowledge makes my heart twinkle. My late mother was an educator, so maybe it’s just in my blood. After tasting success, I knew others needed to know about this too. That’s why I created FREEDOM TO DESIGN. I believe knowledge is meant to be shared.
My mission is to empower other female designers to feel competent, confident, and free to design.
